Mat Pilates is a series of slow and controlled movements that strengthen our 'powerhouse' (as named by the creator of Pilates, Joseph Pilates). Our powerhouse includes our abdominals, glute muscles and back.
Depending on what movement we are doing, we can work all of the muscles in our body! Our movements are slow and controlled (not fast like cardio and no holding poses either like in yoga), and we can either be on our backs, sides, fronts or hands and knees.
Mat pilates also works on improving posture, co-ordination and balance and stability. Most movements have levels, so we can modify a movement in most cases if required.
Mat pilates is performed on a mat (or if you don't have a mat, a thick blanket or similar) on the floor. Being able to be on your back, sides, front or hands and knees is a requirement.
Please bring your own mat to class and your water bottle. No experience necessary.
