Brighton Art SocietyExternal Link presents an introductory watercolour course with Rehann from Seasalt StudioExternal Link . Being Bold in watercolor - Unlock confidence and expression as you paint!

This workshop series is designed to help artists break through hesitation and discover the power of bold painting. Through gestural brushwork, strong composition and unapologetic color, participants will learn to trust their instincts and find their visual voice in watercolor.

Material list

  • Paper:
    • Baohong or Arches 300gsm (rough or cold press). Full sheets can be cut down to half or quarter sheets, more economical. Beginners can use 185gsm cold press as a cheaper alternative.
  • Brushes:
    • A medium squirrel mop (size 8–16) is great for most of the work A few synthetic round brushes (sizes 8, 12, 16) are also very useful
  • Optional extras:
    • hake, dagger brush, rigger for finer details
  • Paints:
    • If you already have paints, bring what you’ve got. Otherwise, artist-quality tubes are best. Minimum is a warm and cool version of each primary colour. There are also a a few optional extras.

      • Ultramarine blue (Warm)
      • Turquoise blue
      • Raw Sienna (Cool)
      • Cadmium Yellow Light (warm)
      • Quinacridone Gold or Australian Red Gold (Warm/Bright)
      • Cadmium Red Light (Warm)
      • Permanent Rose or Alizarin crimson (cool)
      • Burnt Sienna Extra Paint (Optional)
      • Cerulean blue Winsor blue (red shade) or Phthalo blue
      • Gouache Neutral Tint
  • Other Equipment:
    • Mixing palette (plastic or ceramic), water container, towel or sponge Masking tape or clips, spray bottle, pencil iPad, iPhone or tablet for reference photos or reference photos Tissues (no added oils), and even old or failed paintings for warm-ups
