A game for everyone

Table tennis is a fun and social way to stay active and make new friends. Table tennis is an accessible and inclusive sport enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

There are two types of table tennis – social ping pong and competition table tennis.

Social ping pong is a fun, casual way to play. Social ping pong can be played at home or in a club. It’s a great way to get some exercise while having a good time.

For those wanting to take their skills to the next level, competitive table tennis may be for you.

Competition table tennis features weekly competitions, pennant matches, local and national tournaments. Competition table tennis can also be a pathway toward a professional career. Table tennis has been in the Commonwealth Games since 2002, the Summer Olympic Games since 1988. Table tennis will be added to the Australian Masters Games for the first time in October 2025.

Maureen’s story

Maureen

Maureen started playing table tennis as a teenager in the 1950s. While she’s had breaks over the decades, since the 1980s she’s competed every year. Now 86, Maureen still plays 3 times a week.

‘I enjoy meeting with people, as it is a great social atmosphere and a great community to be part of. It is also good for me mentally. It keeps my mind active and physically, it keeps me fit,’ Maureen says.

Maureen plays socially and in competitions that take her around Australia and the globe. She represents Victoria every year at the National Veterans Championships. She’s also represented Australia at the Veterans World Championships in New Zealand, Spain, Italy and the United States.

Maureen encourages other people thinking of trying table tennis to give it a go.

‘It is a great sport to play as you can play anytime, since it’s inside. It keeps you fit and your mind and body active. It is a great way to socialise and meet such a wide variety of people. I have lifelong friends that I have met playing table tennis.’
