Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus, but it can cause serious illness in older people.
From May 2026, eligible older Victorians can access a free RSV vaccine. Check if you’re eligible today.
What is RSV?
RSV is a virus that infects the nose, throat and lungs.
For most people RSV often causes mild, cold- like symptoms. However, in older adults it can lead to serious chest infections, such as pneumonia and worsening of existing heart or lung conditions. RSV infection can result in hospitalisation and prolonged recovery, especially in later life.
Who can get the free RSV vaccine?
From May 2026, a single dose of Arexvy® will be free under the National Immunisation Program for:
- all adults aged 75 years and over
- all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders aged 60 years and over.
If you have had RSV before and are recommended to receive the vaccine, you can be vaccinated once you have fully recovered.
Why RSV vaccination is important for older adults
As we age, our immune system becomes less effective at fighting infections. This means older adults are more likely to become very unwell from RSV, especially those with ongoing heart or lung conditions.
Vaccination helps reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalisation and long recovery periods. They support older people to stay well and independent through the RSV season.
Can I have the RSV vaccine with other vaccines?
Yes. The RSV vaccine can be given at the same time as other vaccines including COVID-19, influenza, shingles and pneumococcal vaccines.
Where can I get vaccinated in Victoria?
Vaccination appointments can be booked at a range of health services including:
- General practices (GPs)
- local council immunisation clinics
- community health centres
- Aboriginal health services
- participating pharmacies.
While the RSV vaccine is free, there may be a consultation fee or service charge to get the vaccine. Speak to your immunisation provider for more information.
