In Victoria, more than 750,000 people with an unpaid role provide support for a family member, partner, friend or community member. Unpaid carers support people with disability, mental illness, drug or alcohol dependency, chronic or terminal illness, or age-related support needs.
National Carers Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate carers and the vital role they play in our communities.
Supporting the carers in your life
There are many ways to show your support and offer help to the carer in your life or community:
- check in
- offer a break
- show you appreciate their role
- encourage self-care.

Free public transport for carers
Explore Melbourne and regional Victoria with free travel from Sunday 12 October to Saturday 18 October 2025.
Eligible Victorian carers need to carry their Victorian Carer Card (‘We Care’) or an Australian Government Pensioner Concession Card (coded CAR) with them on public transport. Touch on and off as usual using a Carer myki. Fares won’t be charged during this period for Carer myki holders.
