Volunteer program helping young learner drivers practice their driving skills

The TAC L2P Program assists Victorian learner drivers aged 16 to 21 with no access to a supervising driver or vehicle to gain the 120 hours driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

To date, the program has helped 15,000 learner drivers

Kate, 20, who gained her Ps recently after participating as a learner driver in the program. Kate lives in regional Victoria with her elderly grandmother who is unable to drive long distances or at night, so getting experience driving in these situations was not possible for Kate.

Kate works full time consisting of both early morning and late nights depending on her shifts, and gaining her licence meant Kate could avoid walking to work or home in the dark. Kate's older brother also participated in the program and achieved his 120 hours of supervised driving practice needed to get his licence.

A total confidence boost

L2P Coordinator Penny watched Kate grow in confidence - not only in the car with her driving, but socially throughout her time in the program.

The TAC L2P Program improves road safety and, for many young learners, a drivers licence leads to education, employment, independence and a sense of achievement. Kate appreciates the time her mentor Greg has given to help her reach 120 hours of driving and will miss driving past the local butcher on the way home!

Volunteering opportunities

The TAC L2P Program is on the lookout for volunteers who can commit 1-2 hours a week to help a young learner complete the 120 hours of driving experience required to apply for a licence.
