After two very successful Getaways last October 2017, Australian Camps Association is planning three more in 2018. The previous two “Getaways” were held at Licola in Gippsland. Accommodation was in cabins, on lower bunks with bathrooms under the same roof. Scrumptious meals were cooked for everyone and various diets were catered for.
One Getaway provided an opportunity for people looking for physical challenges such as abseiling, rock climbing, hiking, high ropes and a giant swing. The other Getaway gave people the opportunity to just ‘have a try’ at outdoor activities, such as canoeing, cycling, flying fox, archery and short hikes.
“I learnt that I actually could do something that previously I was afraid to do!”
All participants were over 55 years, the oldest being a spritely 83, and all but a few attempted every activity and were excited when they overcame their fears and tried the outdoor activities. The participants jelled with each other and became good friends. They all went home ‘on a high’. The smiles continued for weeks, changing people’s lives. It brought like-minded people together and everyone felt involved, included and safe.’
The camps provide an opportunity for older people to do risky activities such as abseiling - breaking the stereotypical picture some people have of older people. One participant had not ridden a bike for 50 years.
The Australian Camps Association has three new “Getaways” in 2018:
27-29 April - an “Adventurers” Getaway in Anglesea for active people
3-5 August - a “Bush” Getaway in Marysville for people wanting to see the local area and try some new activities.
30 November- 2 December - a “Have a Try” Getaway for people near Bacchus Marsh to experience new activities.
Don’t wait! If you would like to register for the above getaways or learn more about camps please contact Australian Camps Association on 9863 6822, Email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit Australian Camps Association website
