Seniors across the state will benefit from a new community initiative to increase their social participation opportunities due to a $700,000 Victorian Government funding package.

A wide range of community initiatives are part of the package designed to strengthen seniors involvement in the community and reduce social isolation and loneliness.

A total of 20 community based, local government ethno-specific and multicultural groups and organisations across the state will receive grants for similar projects.

The funding will support five innovation projects focusing on increasing opportunities for seniors to get involved and addressing barriers to participation through community partnerships.

A further 15 will replicate previously successful community projects in new locations. Projects include a walking soccer program, a cultural singing group, a storytelling and meals program, and community networks with volunteers.

As many as one in ten older Victorians experience social isolation and loneliness. Lower incomes, a lack of support and caring responsibilities can all contribute. Life events such as the loss of a partner, retirement or illness can further impact on older people’s wellbeing.
