Since 2015-16 the government has allocated a total of $1.6 million to 16 rural and regional councils to implement age-friendly community initiatives over two years, strengthening the age-friendly capacity of local communities through partnerships between senior Victorians, governments, communities, businesses, services and support agencies.
Funded projects include:- Age Friendly Community Ambassadors who highlight the range of issues that affect older people with council and raise awareness about what makes a community more age friendly; Addressing local community transport options; Increasing access to information on local social, community and health services through different communication platforms such as Facebook, council websites and service maps specifically designed for older people; Supporting lifelong learning opportunities through local libraries, Neighbourhood Houses, community organisations and U3As; Improving outdoor spaces and places ; and using an intergenerational approach to share and learn skills and knowledge across the generations.
