Week 20: Trip the light fantastic

One of singer/songwriter Claire Chatfield’s happy places is on stage with fellow members of the inclusive world music orchestra, Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde. Composer, pianist and klezmer (a type of traditional Jewish music) expert Pietro Fine founded the group back in 2008, throwing ‘The Orke’ open to community musicians.

Week 20: Trip the light fantastic

A few funny things happened on David Scheel’s way to become a zoologist, leading him to become a comedian instead. ‘I wanted to be a zoologist but I would have had to go to Sydney to study it and I thought if I'm going to be apart from my parents, I might as well go overseas, so I went to England. I drifted into the theatre in the West End and I thought, “Damn it, people think I'm good at this”,’ David says.

Week 20: Trip the light fantastic

‘We have a whole lot of players who are very, very skilled on their instruments, quasi virtuosic, but we also have people who have virtually never played before and I make room for them in the orchestra and give them meaningful parts to add to the whole sound,’ Musical Director Terry Cole says of the Footscray Gypsy Orchestra.
